As we step into a new season, the Development Council is excited to showcase three examples of exceptional leadership that have shaped Kearney, the communities of Buffalo County, and beyond as part of our three-week “Legacy of Leadership” series.

Mayor Stan Clouse of Kearney, Nebraska, has left an indelible mark on the community through his dedicated public service. Having served as Mayor for the City of Kearney for the past 18 years, Clouse spearheaded numerous economic initiatives that have significantly benefited the community. Under his leadership, Kearney has witnessed the implementation of major capital projects totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, all while maintaining the lowest property tax levy among Nebraska's first-class municipalities.

Building a Better Kearney: A Vision of Progress

Mayor Clouse's dedication to Kearney's infrastructure and recreational offerings is evident in developing the $46 million SportsPlex, scheduled to open in early 2025. This project underscores his commitment to providing top-notch facilities that promote health, wellness, and community engagement.

In addition to the SportsPlex, Mayor Clouse played a pivotal role in establishing the TechoNE Crossing industrial park, focusing on data center development and high-tech companies. His efforts led to recruiting a company to build Nebraska's largest solar farm within the technology park.

The development of the 65,000-square-foot Kearney Center for Central Community College further demonstrated Mayor Clouse's support for education and job training. This facility offers essential postsecondary education and job skill training, preparing the workforce for the demands of a rapidly evolving economy.

Another significant accomplishment is Mayor Clouse's successful bid for the Central Nebraska Veterans' Home, a $121 million facility featuring a 225-bed skilled nursing facility. This Veterans’ Home provides a comfortable and supportive environment for veterans needing skilled nursing care.

Mayor Clouse's commitment to Kearney's youth is highlighted by the development of the $7.5 million Patriot Park Youth softball and baseball complex. These fields provided a sporting venue for Kearney's young athletes and contributed to the city's reputation as a hub for recreational activities.

Leadership in Action: Mayor Clouse's Resolve in the Face of Challenges

Mayor Clouse has faced his share of challenges during his tenure, including controversial issues with passionate stakeholders and the delicate balance of economic development with maintaining low taxes. However, through his leadership and dedication, he has approached these challenges head-on, seeking acceptable resolutions to all parties and recruiting new businesses and industries without sacrificing low taxes.

"Public service is about making a positive impact on people's lives and ensuring a better future for our community," Mayor Clouse remarked, encapsulating his core belief in civic engagement's transformative power. For Clouse, public service is not merely a job; it's a calling—a commitment to serve with integrity, empathy, and a relentless drive to improve the lives of others.

His words reflect a deep understanding of the responsibilities and opportunities that come with leadership. By focusing on making a positive impact, Clouse emphasizes the importance of tangible, meaningful change that directly benefits the community. Whether through infrastructure projects, economic development initiatives, or social programs, Clouse's goal was to leave a lasting legacy of progress and prosperity for future generations.

Mayor Clouse's Impact: Fostering Unity and Opportunity in Kearney, NE

Mayor Clouse's public service record underscores his belief in the interconnectedness of community members. He recognizes that he is ultimately building a stronger, more resilient community by uplifting individuals and families. His commitment to public service is not just a duty—it's a personal mission to create a brighter, more prosperous future for all. His words inspire us to see beyond the present challenges and envision a community where everyone has the chance to succeed.

“You gain more by working together than you ever do by trying to take care of it yourself."

As Clouse concludes his time as Mayor, he looks forward to the potential opportunity to represent the residents he loves in the Nebraska state legislature. His legacy will endure as an inspiration for future leaders and a testament to the power of effective leadership in creating positive change.
